The S-Class of SUVs: Why the Mercedes GL-Class X164 Ruled the Road

In 2006, Mercedes-Benz introduced the GL-Class (X164), a full-size luxury SUV designed to be the ultimate family fortress. It wasn't just a bigger ML; it was the "S-Class of SUVs," offering three rows of adult-sized seating, massive towing power, and a level of comfort that made long journeys feel like a first-class flight.

Engineering a Giant

The X164 was a marvel of packaging and space. Despite its enormous size, it featured a unibody construction that provided car-like handling and superior safety compared to traditional body-on-frame SUVs. With its standard Airmatic suspension, the GL could raise itself for off-road obstacles or lower itself for high-speed stability on the Autobahn.

The Off-Road Pro Package

While most GL owners stayed on the pavement, the X164 was surprisingly capable off-road. With the optional "Off-Road Pro" package, it featured a two-speed transfer case and locking differentials, allowing this luxury giant to crawl through mud and rocks that would stop most other family haulers in their tracks.

The Power of the GL420 & GL500

Whether it was the torque-heavy V8 diesel (GL420 CDI) or the smooth, powerful V8 gasoline (GL500), the X164 offered effortless performance. It could tow up to 3,500 kg while carrying seven passengers in absolute silence, wrapped in fine leather and wood trim. It was the ultimate "all-in-one" vehicle for those who refused to compromise.

A Legacy of Presence

With its massive grille and imposing silhouette, the X164 established the GL-Class (later renamed GLS) as the undisputed king of luxury SUVs. It proved that a Mercedes could be massive, rugged, and incredibly elegant all at the same time, setting the benchmark for every full-size luxury SUV that followed.
