The Million-Mile Legend: Why the Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 "Stroke-Eight" is the World's Most Reliable Classic

The Million-Mile Legend: Why the Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 "Stroke-Eight" is the World's Most Reliable Classic

In 1968, Mercedes-Benz unleashed a machine that would redefine the meaning of "indestructible." The W114 and W115 series, famously known in the Middle East as "The Pig" (Al-Khanzeera) and in Europe as the "Stroke-Eight" (/8), wasn't just a car; it was an engineering fortress built to outlast its owners.

Engineering the Unbreakable

Designed by the legendary Paul Bracq, the W114/W115 introduced a completely new chassis that moved away from the aging "Fintail" era. It featured a sophisticated semi-trailing arm rear suspension, providing a level of stability and comfort that was unheard of in its class. But its real magic lay in its mechanical simplicity—it was built to be repaired anywhere in the world with basic tools.

The Greek Taxi: 4.6 Million Kilometers of Proof

The ultimate proof of this car's reliability comes from a Greek taxi driver named Gregorios Sachinidis. He drove his 1976 240D for a mind-blowing 4.6 million kilometers (2.8 million miles). After decades of non-stop service, Mercedes-Benz took the car back to place it in their museum in Stuttgart, recognizing it as the highest-recorded mileage Mercedes in history.

W114 vs. W115: The Power of Five

While they look identical, the W114 models were the refined six-cylinder versions, while the W115 housed the rugged four-cylinder engines. The W115 also made history by introducing the 240D 3.0—the world’s first production five-cylinder diesel engine. This engine became the backbone of transportation across Africa and the Middle East, capable of running on almost any fuel in the harshest environments.

A Timeless Icon of Durability

With its iconic vertical headlights and tank-like build quality, the W114/W115 represents a time when Mercedes-Benz prioritized over-engineering above all else. It remains a symbol of an era where luxury meant reliability. Today, it’s a highly sought-after classic for those who want a car that doesn't just drive—it survives.
