Hyundai 20M 1969 1973 Technical Specifications and Performance Review

Hyundai 20M 1969

The Hyundai 20M, produced between 1969 and 1973, was the first luxury executive sedan offered by Hyundai through its technical partnership with Ford of Europe. Based on the Ford Taunus 20M (P7), this car was a symbol of prestige and high-status in the early days of the Korean automotive industry. It combined European engineering with refined styling, making it the most powerful and luxurious car available in its class during that era.

Engine and Performance Specifications:

The standout feature of the Hyundai 20M was its smooth V6 engine, a rarity for cars in that period. It was equipped with a 2.0-liter (1,998 cc) 60-degree V6 Ford Cologne engine. This power unit produced approximately 90 horsepower and 155 Nm of torque. The engine featured a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) per bank and a twin-choke carburetor. It was paired with a 4-speed manual transmission or an optional 3-speed automatic, delivering a top speed of around 160 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration in approximately 14 seconds.

Chassis and Suspension:

The Hyundai 20M utilized a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, which was the standard for luxury sedans of the time. The front suspension consisted of MacPherson struts with coil springs and an anti-roll bar, while the rear featured a rigid axle with longitudinal leaf springs. This setup provided a soft and comfortable ride, characteristic of European executive cruisers. The braking system used hydraulic discs at the front and drums at the rear, which was advanced for the late 1960s.

Dimensions and Exterior:

- Overall Length: 4.72 meters.

- Overall Width: 1.76 meters.

- Overall Height: 1.48 meters.

- Wheelbase: 2.70 meters.

- Curb Weight: Approximately 1,115 kg.

- Fuel Tank Capacity: 55 liters.

The exterior design followed the "Coke Bottle" styling trend of the late 60s, featuring a long hood, prominent chrome bumpers, and a wide front grille with dual round headlights.

Interior Luxury and Features:

Inside, the Hyundai 20M offered a level of opulence that was previously unseen in local markets. It featured high-quality vinyl or cloth upholstery, a wood-grain finish on the dashboard, and a comprehensive instrument cluster with an analog clock. The car was spacious enough to seat five adults comfortably, and it included advanced features for its time, such as a high-output heater, a cigarette lighter, and a radio. The trunk was exceptionally large, offering plenty of space for executive luggage.

Legacy and Reliability:

The Hyundai 20M is remembered as the car that proved Hyundai could manufacture high-end, complex vehicles. Its V6 engine was praised for its quiet operation and longevity. Because it was based on Ford engineering, parts were robust and the mechanicals were straightforward to maintain for skilled mechanics. Today, the Hyundai 20M is a highly sought-after collector's item, representing the birth of the luxury segment for the Hyundai brand.
